Common Boiler Breakdown Problems and When to Call an Engineer
When your boiler stops working, especially during a cold snap in North Yorkshire, it can be stressful. While some issues have simple fixes, others need a qualified engineer. At Ribble Heating Ltd, we've seen every boiler problem imaginable across Settle, Skipton, the Yorkshire Dales, South Cumbria, and Lancashire. Here's our guide to the most common breakdowns and what to do about them.
1. Low Boiler Pressure
Symptoms: Your boiler displays a low pressure warning or the pressure gauge reads below 1 bar. Radiators may not heat up properly.
What to check: You can repressurise your boiler using the filling loop — check your manufacturer's manual for instructions. If the pressure keeps dropping after you've topped it up, you likely have a leak in the system and should call an engineer.
2. No Heating or Hot Water
Symptoms: The boiler is on but radiators stay cold or there's no hot water.
Possible causes:
- Thermostat issues
- Broken diverter valve
- Airlocks in the system
- Frozen condensate pipe (common in winter)
Frozen condensate pipe: If it's very cold outside and your boiler stops working, the condensate pipe (the white plastic pipe leading outside) may be frozen. You can carefully pour warm (not boiling) water over the external pipe to thaw it. If that doesn't work, call us.
3. Strange Noises — Kettling
Symptoms: Banging, gurgling, or whistling sounds from your boiler or pipes.
What it means: "Kettling" is usually caused by limescale build-up in the heat exchanger, restricting water flow and causing the water to boil. This reduces efficiency and can damage the boiler if left. It needs professional descaling.
4. Radiator Cold Spots
Symptoms: The top of your radiators is cold while the bottom is warm.
The fix: This is usually trapped air. Bleeding your radiators with a radiator key releases the air. If the problem persists after bleeding, there may be sludge in the system — you'll need a power flush.
5. Boiler Keeps Switching Off
Symptoms: The boiler fires up but then shuts down after a short time.
Possible causes:
- Low water pressure
- Faulty pump
- Blocked heat exchanger
- Thermostat issue
This needs a professional diagnosis — call us on 07586028202.
6. Pilot Light Keeps Going Out
Symptoms: The pilot light won't stay lit on an older boiler.
Possible causes:
- Faulty thermocouple
- Draughts blowing the pilot out
- Gas supply issues
If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately.
7. Leaking Boiler
Symptoms: Water dripping from the boiler or pooling underneath.
What to do: Turn off the boiler and the water supply. A leak can cause internal corrosion and electrical damage — don't ignore it. Call an engineer right away.
When to Call a Professional
You should never attempt to open the boiler casing or work on gas components yourself — it's illegal and dangerous. Call a Gas Safe-registered engineer if:
- Your boiler has stopped working entirely
- You smell gas
- There are warning codes on the display you don't understand
- The boiler is making unusual noises
- There's water leaking from the boiler
- Your carbon monoxide alarm is going off
