Winter Heating Preparation: A Checklist for North Yorkshire Homes
Winters in North Yorkshire can be harsh, especially in the Dales and higher ground around Settle, Ingleton, and the Ribble Valley. A well-prepared heating system means a warm, safe, and efficient home through the coldest months. Here's our complete winter heating checklist.
1. Book Your Boiler Service
This is the single most important step. An annual service by a Gas Safe (for gas boilers) or OFTEC-registered (for oil boilers) engineer ensures your boiler is running safely and efficiently. Book between June and October for the best availability — don't wait until November when everyone's boiler breaks down at once.

2. Bleed Your Radiators
Trapped air in radiators means cold spots and wasted energy. Bleed all radiators before winter:
- Turn off your heating and let the system cool
- Use a radiator key to open the bleed valve (top of radiator)
- Hold a towel underneath — water will trickle out when the air is released
- Close the valve when water starts dripping
- Check your boiler pressure afterwards — bleeding may lower it
3. Check Your Thermostat and Controls
- Room thermostat: Test it works and consider lowering to 18–21°C for comfort and efficiency
- Programmable thermostat: Set heating schedules to match your routine
- Smart thermostat: If you have one, set up winter schedules and frost protection
- TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves): Check they turn freely and set unused rooms lower
4. Insulate Pipes
Frozen pipes can burst and cause significant water damage. Check:
- Condensate pipe: The white plastic pipe from your boiler to outside should be insulated — frozen condensate is a top cause of winter boiler breakdowns
- External pipework: Any water pipes in unheated areas (lofts, garages, outbuildings) should be lagged
- Oil supply pipes: If you're on oil heating, ensure supply lines are protected from freezing
5. Check Your Oil Level
If you're on oil heating:
- Check your tank level before winter
- Order oil while prices are typically lower (late summer/early autumn)
- Consider an oil tank monitor to track usage
- Have the tank inspected for cracks, leaks, or water ingress
6. Test Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarms
- Carbon monoxide alarms: Essential for any home with gas or oil appliances. Test all alarms and replace batteries. If you don't have one, install one in every room with a fuel-burning appliance.
- Smoke alarms: Test monthly and replace units over 10 years old.
7. Check for Drafts
Sealing drafts improves comfort and reduces heating costs:
- Check around doors, windows, and letterboxes
- Use draft excluders or brush strips
- Consider thermal curtains for windows
- Check loft hatches for gaps
8. Service Your Fire or Gas Appliances
If you have a gas fire, solid fuel stove, or other gas appliances, they should be serviced annually too. A Gas Safe engineer can check these alongside your boiler.
9. Know Your Emergency Numbers
Keep these numbers handy:
- Ribble Heating emergency repairs: 07586028202
- National Gas Emergency Service: 0800 111 999 (if you smell gas)
- Your oil supplier: For emergency oil deliveries
10. Consider a Service Plan
A service plan covers your annual service and can include priority callouts and discounts on parts. It spreads the cost monthly and gives you peace of mind. Ribble Heating offers Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans — see our Service Plans page for details.
